JOSEPH S. PULVER AWARD AT NECRONOMICON 2026

To my supreme shock, I won one of two Joseph S. Pulver Sr Awards presented tonight at the 2026 NecronomiCon in Providence. Mr. Pulver, who passed in 2020, was a tireless champion of new and upcoming writers making strong contributions to weird and speculative fiction. It was an immense honor accepting it, especially from my dear friend and colleague S.J. Bagley, who along with Fiona Geist and Hellie Schweizer and everyone at Weird Providence Bookstore have been phenomenal and generous supporters of my work. I’m so grateful to you all, and Ken Vaughan, Niels Viggo, and all of the NecronomiCon Providence organizers.

My pal Clint Smith was on hand, along with Lauren Elise Daniels, Adam Golaski, Larissa Glasser, and many others. Clint once said that maybe this writing thing is “about making a friend.” Tonight, looking out over so many friends and colleagues while being presented this award, I was reminded of this most astute observation, and also of Lovecraft and how his friends were the ones who believed in his work and made certain he survived long after he’d gone. I’m so grateful for this beautiful community of the weird, and a nod to Clint for identifying the heart of what this is all really about: honest work and real connections.

H. P. LOVECRAFT’S PROVIDENCE – A WALKING TOUR

I have created an H. P. Lovecraft walking tour of Providence! Below is the description, schedule, and where to buy tickets:

Howard Phillips Lovecraft, pioneer of the weird tale, is one of the 20th century’s most important and influential authors. This 1.5-mile walking tour winds up and down the historic colonial streets and hills along College Hill on Providence’s historic East Side, and features many of the Lovecraft highlights, including places where he lived and frequented. You’ll hear quotes from his letters, and see how Lovecraft used Providence as material for some of his most seminal works.
