H.P. LOVECRAFT’S PROVIDENCE – A WALKING TOUR

Howard Phillips Lovecraft, pioneer of the weird tale, is one of the 20th century’s most important and influential authors. He was born and lived nearly all his life in Providence, Rhode Island—a city that was central to his work as an author. His fiction and copious letters (over 100,000!) are filled with references and descriptions of Providence, which also serve as settings for many of his tales. This 1.5 hour walking tour winds up and down the historic colonial streets and steep hills along College Hill on Providence’s historic East Side, and features many of the Lovecraft highlights in Providence. We will venture to the places he loved, lived, frequented, and the ones that show up in some of his tales, such as “The Shunned House,” “The Haunter of the Dark,” and The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. Quotes read from these stories will help to illustrate the influence of Providence on Lovecraft and his stories.

~POE IN THE PARLOR~

Edgar Allan Poe, master of the Gothic and the macabre, penned some of the most startling and enduring dark tales in all of fiction. In this program, author and historian Joshua Rex performs “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Masque of the Red Death,” and “The Raven” from memory. Rex discusses Poe’s life in context with the Victorian Era, and provides details about his work in order to illuminate the deeper meaning behind each piece. The evening ends with a Q&A and discussion session. Typically the program runs around an hour, and is perfect for September and October, but also any time of year – everyone loves Poe!

I am in the process of creating several program offerings bookable for museums, bookstores, libraries, and other organizations. Programs will be added here as they become available.
